Egg-shaped pod for living off the grid - Micro-housing is all the rage when it comes to sustainable living. But what if you want to live off the grid with all the creature comforts of home? This is Ecocapsule, an egg-shaped luxury survival pod that has the ability to generate its own wind or solar electricity along with the ability to create drinkable water from almost any freshwater source.
Ekso is a battery-powered external skeleton that makes it possible for paralyzed people to walk. More than 20 years ago, Amanda Boxtel was paralyzed during a skiing accident. She is the first person in the U.S. to own the Ekso Bionics exoskeleton suit -- called E-Legs. For more TechKnow: http://aljazeera.com/techknow
MIT cheetah robot lands the running jump -- In a leap for robotic development, the MIT researchers who built a robotic cheetah have now trained it to see and jump over hurdles as it runs — making this the first four-legged robot to run and jump over obstacles autonomously. Robotic Surgery Just Got More Autonomous -- Putting surgery one step closer into the realm of self-driving cars and intelligent machines, researchers show for the first time that a supervised autonomous robot can successfully perform soft tissue surgery. The robot outperformed expert surgeons and current robot-assisted surgical techniques in open bowel surgery in pigs.
Today Oculus released the Rift virtual reality headset. It’s a $599 device that transports you anywhere and everywhere. Right now, it’s mainly a piece of gaming hardware but it’s also a way to experience new environments and change the way you interact with reality. Lucas Matney takes an in-depth look at the new Oculus Rift.
Much like the popular f.lux, Apple’s new Night Shift mode eliminates blue light from your display for better use while reading in darker environments. Apple says using Night Shift will help your circadian rhythms, and help you get better sleep.
News and Notes
Apple’s Notes app is a bit more secure, now. You’ll be able to hide notes behind Touch ID, which Apple thinks will encourage more users to entrust personal data to the app.
There’s no new features for Health, but Apple is recommending popular apps you might want to use in its own Health app.
A feature most won’t be able to tap into, iOS 9.3 now allows classrooms to assign multiple users to devices so students can share iPads. Schools that create Apple IDs for students can now manage them, and a new Classroom app lets teachers manage students’ progress better.
“Innovation at Nike is not about dreaming of tomorrow. It’s about accelerating toward it,” says Tinker Hatfield. “We’re able to anticipate the needs of athletes because we know them better than anybody. Sometimes, we deliver a reality before others have even begun to imagine it.”
After a close final match, Google's AlphaGo has defeated world champion Lee Se-dol in Google DeepMind's Go tournament. This leaves the final tournament score at 4-1 in favor of AlphaGo. The overall outcome was decided during the third match, when AlphaGo won the three required matches consecutively. However, all five games were set to be played. "It's really difficult to see where [Se-dol] went wrong," said Chris Garlock, managing editor of the American Go E-Journal, towards the end of the match. AlphaGo and Se-dol both winning games muddies the waters for what the tournament really means. Of course, the artificial intelligence algorithm did win the first three and final games of the series, but Se-dol was able to adapt and prevent a total sweep. That fourth game, won be Se-dol, showed that while AlphaGo could simulate an extremely competent player, it still plays at a human level. Even the terse ending in this final match removes any idea of AlphaGo's invulnerability. However,...........
Blockchains are ledgers (like Excel spreadsheets), but they accept inputs from lots of different parties. The ledger can only be changed when there is a consensus among the group. That makes them more secure, and it means there's no need for a central authority to approve transactions.
This is the first fully painted feature film in the world, directed by Polish painter and director Dorota Kobiela and Hugh Welchman (Oscar winner for producing "Peter and the Wolf"). The film is produced by Oscar-winning Studios Breakthru Films and Trademark Films.
This year’s top 10 strategic technology trends are grouped into these three complementary trends that are mutually reinforcing with amplified disruptive characteristics.
Panasonic has released a clip demonstrating the uses of robotic assistants, from disaster relief to care for the elderly.
Robots may have been making headlines recently, but it’s largely been for the wrong reasons. In January, Deloitte produced a report claiming that automation will take 11 million jobs by 2036, and earlier in the month Labour deputy Tom Watson urged the government to investigate the impact of robots on jobs. Panasonic has instead offered a glimpse of the future where man and machine work together..........
Split-screen multitasking and improved notification controls are among the new features being added to the Android operating system (OS). An early build of the new OS, known as Android N, was released on Thursday for app developers to test. Google said it had released the beta software earlier than usual so that device manufacturers could get the finished version sooner. At the moment, fewer than 3% of Android phones run the latest OS, Marshmallow.
Two weeks ago researchers from Google and RWTH Aachen University unveiled a paper detailing a new deep learning neural network system called PlaNet capable of “superhuman” accuracy in taking an arbitrary photograph and estimating the geographic location it depicts anywhere on earth. In essence, by training the system on a massive archive of geotagged imagery from across the entire world, the system learns what each location on earth looks like and is able to estimate the likely location of a new image handed to it, even if the image is taken from an entirely new angle in different lighting with a different foreground. In a sign of the scale that modern deep learning systems operate at, the researchers used two different approaches, one trained on 91 million images from across the web and a second trained on 490 million public images from the Google+ platform.
